The HOYA Group actively engages in environmental preservation efforts as part of its corporate social responsibility in order to pass on to future generations a global environment in better shape than today.

Structuring of a Global Management System for its Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health Management System

The HOYA Group has been structuring a globally-operated management system based on ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001 and ISO45001 with the purpose of promoting the environmental protection activities by the employees and ensuring the safety and health of the employees.

In February 2013, the certification of the Group switched to global multisite certification.

As of the end of March 2021, the certification is applied to 50 sites.

HOYA Strategy for CO2 Reduction

The HOYA Group is globally operating its environmental protection activities, in which attempts are being made to reduce CO2 emissions by paying special attention to its “energy usage.”

CO2 Reduction Targets:

The HOYA Group has been focusing its efforts on environmental protection activities, having set its CO2 emissions reduction target at achieving “a 5-percent reduction of CO2 emissions from fiscal 2016 by fiscal 2020 (compared with the level of fiscal 2014).”
Also, having set the HOYA Group’s new medium-term target at achieving “a 16-percent reduction of CO2 emissions per unit of net sales from fiscal 2021 by fiscal 2025 (compared with the level of fiscal 2019)” as its target for the next five years, the HOYA Group is engaged in initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions by setting numerical targets and formulating action plans in each business with the aim of fulfilling the Group’s target.

CO2 Emissions:

In fiscal 2020, which was the final year for the medium-term target, the HOYA Group’s CO2 emissions amounted to 406,176 tons. (Scope 1 and 2 emissions)
CO2 emissions increased by 1.3% compared with the level in fiscal 2014, falling short of the target; however, we were able to reduce CO2 emissions per unit of net sales by 9.4%. We will continue to accelerate our initiatives so that we can successfully reduce not only CO2 emissions per unit of net sales but also total CO2 emissions.

Case Examples of Activities for Reducing Environmental Burdens

The HOYA Group has been practicing various environmental burden reduction activities under its Environmental Philosophy and Fundamental Environmental Policies.

1.Soil pollution control measures, underground water pollution
control measures, hazardous substance leak control measures

In March 2010, the Group issued the HOYA Group Standard for Environmental Facilities, which was designed to promote the duplexing of piping and underground tanks and the exact performance of inspection and renovation of tank dikes, and the like.

2.Proper Disposal of Industrial Waste

In entrusting contracted disposal of factory waste, the individual facilities select the contractors after carefully checking their business licenses.

Also, through consignment contract with appropriate disposal contractors, the Group promotes the recycling of industrial waste, creation of monetary values out of waste, and reduction of waste emissions.

Profits from the creation of monetary values out of waste are donated to the Japan Eye Bank Association, for instance, which is one of the Group’s various activities of social contributions.

3.Reduction of water consumption

As part of its efforts at effective use of natural resources, the Group companies are endeavoring to reduce water consumption by circulating the water used in the manufacturing process.

4.Energy saving and power saving activities

As part of the actions for energy saving and power saving, each of the facilities is pushing ahead with the replacement of lighting fixtures and air conditioning equipment with those of energy-saving type.

At each of the Group’s production bases, efforts are being made for energy saving by reviewing the current status of energy use and devising more efficient mode of operation.

Also, efforts are being made to replace the existing equipment with the energy-saving type equipment in an appropriate order.

Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at overseas offices using Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)

JCM means contributing to global warming countermeasures through dissemination of excellent low-carbon technologies to developing countries, and at the same time appropriately evaluating the contribution to Japan’s emission reduction. It is a mechanism to utilize it to achieve the reduction targets of Japan.

HOYA establishes an international consortium with HOYA LENS VIETNAM LTD. (HOLV), a subsidiary in Vietnam in August 2016, introduces energy-saving equipment utilizing subsidies from JCM equipment subsidized business system by April 2018.

We began initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam since June 2018.
